Caligula and Sound as Ever 90-99 are proud to present the brand-new single: BROKEN
90’s electro rockers CALIGULA release their brand new single – ‘Broken’ on the 12th November 2021 – their first offering since their Top 20 ARIA album Rubenesque (1994).
Spearheaded by original members Ashley Rothschild and Jamie Fonti – ‘Broken’ was conceived during lockdown and is a return to form for the band who reformed in 2018 to support international touring buddies Pop Will Eat Itself as well as joining the Spring Loaded Festival line-up in 2021.
Joining ranks with record label Sound as Ever, Rothschild says ‘Broken’ took on a life of its own during lockdown in 2020.
“I started to really take notice of what was going on in the world. Social media and morning news were at the forefront for information and would leave me with less and less optimism. Everything appeared to be breaking down to the point that I wondered if we were too far gone. Are we broken?”
In the early ‘90’s, Caligula’s name was synonymous with the burgeoning alt rock electronica scene of Sydney. The band released 2 eps at the turn of the decade, Caligula (1990) and Got One (1991) and became a national name and Triple J playlist staple with their Bluff (91) and ICU (93) EP’s and debut album Rubenesque (1994) which went Top 20 and included their Smokey Robinson cover Tears of a Clown (#25 ARIA chart).
After countless shows including several Big Day Out tours and numerous international supports – Beastie Boys, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and Depeche Mode, Rothschild left to pursue other musical interests, and Fonti formed Primary with Connie Mitchell (Sneaky Sound System) resulting in the demise of Caligula.
“I always felt that the band had so much more to give than the one album and handful of EP’s we released” says Rothschild.
“When we put Caligula back together, it just felt right – almost as if we had never parted ways. When Jamie and I decided to write together, we found the spark was still there, and we now have two albums worth of new material.”
The release of ‘Broken’ will follow with an east coast tour in the new year and an album, some 27 years in the making.
“I’m stupidly excited to share our first new material with everyone, especially live.” – Ash Rothschild.
